IV Nutrition Q & A

What is IV nutrition?

IV nutrition, also known as parenteral nutrition, is an effective method for ensuring your body gets the nutrition it needs when a medical condition disrupts normal digestion.

Normal digestion happens when the food you eat breaks down inside your stomach and absorbs into your bowel. The blood then carries the nutrients from the food throughout your body. With IV nutrition, your bloodstream receives special liquid food through an intravenous needle, bypassing the normal digestion process in the stomach and bowel.

The IV food mixture contains several nutrients vital to good health, including

  • Proteins
  • Carbohydrates
  • Fats
  • Minerals
  • Vitamins

Dr. Jay may prescribe IV nutrition on a short-term basis to improve your nutrient intake. IV nutrition is also available for long-term use in patients with chronic or recurrent medical conditions.

What conditions may require IV nutrition?

If you have a medical condition that limits your ability to digest food or absorb nutrients from the foods you eat, Dr. Jay may recommend IV nutrition therapy. These conditions may include:

  • Cancer
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Short bowel syndrome
  • Bowel obstruction
  • Acute pancreatitis
  • Gastrointestinal disorders

What can I expect during an IV nutrition procedure?

During the procedure, Dr. Jay administers general anesthesia to ensure your comfort. He inserts a thin, flexible tube into a large vein in your arm or your chest. He places the catheter either entirely under your skin or partially under the skin, with a piece of the tube remaining exposed.

When you recover from anesthesia, Dr. Jay and his team monitor your tolerance to the IV nutrition to confirm there is no excess fluid buildup or other complications before you can resume your feeding treatments at home.

You can expect to feel fatigue and possible irritation at the catheter insertion site. Prolonged fatigue is also a common side effect of IV nutrition.

What are the risks of IV nutrition?

Catheter infection is the most common complication of IV nutrition. It’s important to follow all of Dr. Jay’s guidelines to ensure catheter safety.

Other potential risks include:

  • Blood clots
  • Mineral imbalances
  • Fluid buildup
  • Blood sugar complications
